RICH HISTORY

Gastonia started as a railroad depot station in the early 1870s. Over time, businesses began to open, and Gastonia was incorporated as a town by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1877. Among those businesses were textile mills. Gastonia was known as a powerhouse textile manufacturing area. One mill sent shock waves throughout the entire nation and was a pivotal moment in the city and national history. The Loray Mill strike is a testament to the grit that runs through the city's veins. Gastonia’s grit is responsible for its transformation throughout history and its rapid growth today.
